"Golden Circle"
After we picked up our rental car we starting driving east towards our first stop on the "Golden Circle" - the Thingvellir National Park. Here, the Eurasian and the North American plate are diverging at a speed of about one centimeter per year. First we visited the Öxararfoss waterfall, then we walked along the ridge of the tectonical drift zone and finally had a nice view over the Thingvallavatn lake.
The second stop led us to the small town of Geysir where we visited - surprise - some geysers :) there were a couple of sleepy ones but the Strokkur geyser blew off about every 5 minutes.
The next stop of the "Golden Circle" was at the Gulfoss waterfall which falls about 35m in two steps. Luckily the sun even came out producing quite a nice rainbow over the waterfall :)
The last stop of the day was at the Kerith volcano crater (no worries - this time one that is no longer active;) ).
All in all, the first day on the road was very nice as we got to see a lot of different parts of the Icelandic nature and the weather was not too bad (everything is relative here though). Let's see what the next days bring for us :)
