Selfoss, Ring Road 1, Vik
Day 2 of our roadtrip leads us along the southwestern coast of Iceland from Selfoss to Vik. The weather was changing crazily often that day - we had high winds, rain, hailstorms and then bright sunshine again and all of that about five times ;)
Our first stop was at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall which descends about 70m. We could even walk behind the waterfall but due to the high winds we got pretty wet there :)
Next, we drove past the famous and unpronouncable volcano/glacier Eyjafjallajökull which erupted in 2010 and blocked almost all trans-atlantic flights. The signs of this eruption where omnipresent - destroyed houses, ash on the nearby farmland and lava and rock debris all over the place.
The next stop was then at another famous waterfall - Skogafoss. We hiked up to the top of the fall and walked a little upstream since we have heard from some fellow travellers that there are even more beautiful waterfalls - and there were :)
When we came down again we got lucky and saw a huge rainbow in front of the waterfall.
We continued and drove to the Solheimajökull glacier where we walked a little bit through the glacier valley and around its edge. It was fascinating to see these huge ice blocks in front of us.
Shortly before we arrived in Vik we made a stop at a viewpoint overlooking the famous black beaches there.
