Waikiki, Waimea
Aloha! - after a full-day trip from Auckland via Tokyo to Honolulu we finally arrived in Hawaii. Since this stop marks our return to the "winter" part of the globe we spent the first day in Honolulu with some cold-gear shopping :) Waikiki itself was rather unspectecular as it is a city that has grown around the beach (ok the beach is pretty awesome) and that lives off its Japanese tourists.
From Honolulu we flew to the most northerly island - Kaua'i where we choose Kapaa, the second largest town, as our base. Unfortunately, the weather hasn't been good over the last weeks so our initial plans of spending three nights in a tent along the picturesque Na Pali Coast were litterally washed away.
Instead, we went to see the Waimea Canyon which is claimed to be the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" (it's not as big as the "original" but it definitely lives up to the beauty). We hiked about 4km down into the canyon and then returned - we were really lucky that the rainy clouds were stuck at the opposite side and we saw a nice rainbow :)
